SchoolingSchooling in the Methow Valley comes in many shapes and sizes from the traditional K-12 Public School System to the myriad of community sponsored classes ranging from dance, music, language to martial arts, history, art and cooking, just to name a few. In the arena of formal schooling, there are many choices for the youth of the community. The Little Star Montessori School is celebrating their twenty second year of operation and has provided the young children of the Methow Valley the opportunity for a healthy and joyful early childhood education. Located in Winthrop Washington, the program strives to cultivate children’s natural curiosity and creativity lies at the heart of this Montessori program. Each child is encouraged to develop as a whole person and acquire a life long love of learning. Home School students and parents have a close knit association with each other and with the local school district. There is resource person available to those who are seeking support in the home school setting. The Methow Valley Community School is an independent school 1st-6th grade. MVCS is entering it's 6th year with an enrollment cap of 30 students. MVCS is guided by the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound Teaching Model, a highly successful model developed in the 1980's by Outward Bound. Classrooms are structured in a multi age setting in two 1-3rd / 4-6th grade combined classes. Fostering independence and self motivation is encouraged with emphasis on experiential based learning. Collaborative planning, thematic instruction, enthusiasm and creative problem solving are core components of MVCS staff. Environmental Education, Music and the Arts, Health, Community Service, and Science are woven into core academic subjects. Each year teachers develop a theme or "expedition" as the primary course of study. Tuition is $5040 per year. 70% of all MVCS students receive some form a financial assistance through the MVCS scholarship program. The Methow Valley Community School is located in three rooms of the Methow Valley Community Center in Twisp. It is a member of the Washington Federation of Independent Schools. The goal of the program is to nurture a child’s natural abilities, sense of place, and growing wonder. The students are taught to practice in depth critical thinking and creative expression and value community, character growth, and adventure and become ambassadors into the journey of life-long learning. Methow Valley School District 350 is one of the largest school districts in the state encompassing 2,337 square miles. The student population hovers around 600 and the district prides itself on the close cooperation between the schools and the community. The mission statement for the district aptly summarizes their goal: the Methow Valley Schools, in partnership with the community, educate each individual by promoting character development, critical thinking, and a desire for life long learning and discovery. Curriculum, technology, social/emotional/health needs, school and community, staff/students and facilities are all considered as the district does strategic planning for the future. New and exciting curriculum around the standards of reading, writing communication and math are the result of a core group of dedicated teaching staff and assistants. There is a strong Fine Arts program and numerous enrichment activities at all levels of the K-12 program. The district has a strong record of passing school levies and bond initiatives and routinely communicates with the community to keep those ties strong. The District participates in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) to assess students in grades 4, 7, and 10 and the national No Child Left Behind program. The teacher’s routinely receive assorted awards for excellence and the students boast a high school graduation rate of between 97% and 100%.
