Find Out More About the Mazama, Winthrop and Methow Valley Area Economy & Job MarketThe Methow Valley is located in western Okanogan County in the North-Central portion of Washington State. Formed by glacier activity, the area is a long and narrow valley which follows the Methow River from it's confluence with the Columbia River at Pateros, WA. Winding due north along the river through the towns of Methow, Carlton, Twisp, Winthrop and Mazama, and on up into the majestic Cascade Mountain Range and the North Cascades National Park. The area has maintained its rural character even as it's population has grown. Most folks know each other by their "rig" and waving to your neighbor on the road is still common place, and in fact, has been perfected to an art form! The basic economic generators include agriculture, forestry, government, (US Forest Service and Methow Valley School District #350), tourism, construction, real estate and recreation. Agriculture in the Valley has included apples, cattle, sheep, beans, peas, corn, and alfalfa. Today alfalfa, orchards and cattle production are limited, but make up the bulk of the agriculture in the area. Timber is also important to the economy, although the economy was hurt by the mill closing in Twisp in the late 1970's, and the more recent cutbacks in timber sales by the Forest Service. Tourism and recreation have come to the forefront as the primary economic generators, along with real estate and construction brought about by the area's attraction as a second home market for the Greater Seattle area. The hotels, shops, galleries, restaurants and special events, which are primarily in Mazama, Winthrop and Twisp, are most prevalent from April through November when the North Cross State Pass is open. However, the cross country skiing and snowmobile related businesses are experiencing steady increases in visitor activity during the winter months. The Methow Valley has a wide variety of both dispersed and concentrated recreational opportunities for visitors and residents including backcountry hiking, world class rock climbing, river rafting, fishing, mountain biking, hunting, snowmobile activities, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing. Numerous overnight campgrounds, guest ranches, tourist accommodations and area golf courses draw visitors as well. Sun Mountain Lodge, located just West of Winthrop, and the Wilson Ranch near Mazama, capitalize on their location in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range and attract convention business as well as other tourists who take advantage of the varied year around recreational activities. The overall economy of the area is marked by creative entrepreneurship and driven by job opportunities created by tourism and the construction trades, along with telecommuting businesses. High speed internet connection is available throughout most of the valley. Though stop signs are almost non existent and cell phone reception spotty, the area is a great place to live and work.
